Manufactured from amberized borosilicate glass, The Fossil contains an Edison filament with a touch sensitive dimmer switch that ‘breathes with you’ whilst you grasp it.

Intended as living museum piece, the lamp is a preservation of Thomas Edison’s first truly reliable filament bulb, invented circa 1880. Resembling a fossil preserved in amber, the lamp demonstrates the transition of the filament from an object of fundamental functionality, to its place today as an icon of design heritage. A representation of the beauty of innovation, the bulb is now retired to a life behind glass, as a true industrial fossil.

Blown using laboratory glass production methods, with an amber finish ordinarily used to prevent the contents of chemical vases and drug vessels from deteriorating, the capsule form is a reference to the material’s scientific heritage - Whilst the finish itself enhances the notion of preservation.

The pulsing dimmer switch enables the user to ‘breathe life’ back into the filaments, establishing the warmth and magnetism that sets traditional bulbs apart from many contemporary lighting solutions.

Two pieces of bead-rolled steel form the lamp's shell; held in place by two worm-driven clamps.

The process of bead rolling introduces rigidity to the lightweight sheet structure; providing a return to house the diffusers whilst creating exterior channels for the clamps.

The diffusers are available in a selection of heavy tints, allowing the bulb to be at maximum luminosity without creating glare, with light escaping through the aperture at the rear. The body is available in a combination of three finishes; galvanised, enamel gloss, or textured matte.

The form and construction of the lamp is a reference to the materials and techniques seen in traditional marine exploration; port holes, diving helmets, periscopes…

		<description>Scented Promotional Poster for the 24th International Contemporary Furniture Fair 2012.

- - - - - - - - - -

Produced as a promotional poster for the ‘Tools for Everyday Life’ project by Designers in Residence at the ICFF 2012. A reference to the tool gilding of old, this print is a celebration of the ornamentation of manual objects. Taking its visual language from a Victorian eclecticism, the artwork pays homage to a time where manual devices were adorned with a resolution that matched the artefacts they were designed to produce.

The exhibition of the ‘Tools for Everyday Life’ project aims to reinstate a balance of artistry, both manual and machined - championing not solely products, but also the things that are used to create them.

Hand printed and scented with machine oil, the print has been produced in a limited edition of 50.

The image depicts the journey made by the residents to the big apple for the exhibition.

Produced as a promotional poster for the ‘Tools for Everyday Life’ Project, this print was designed and illustrated by Neil Conley circa 2012. A reference to the tool gilding of old, this print is a celebration of the ornamentation of manual objects. A Journey made by makers to tout their wares on foreign soil. Artefacts forged where the land meets the sea, in the shadow of the rising tides and the jetstream. A love of all things executed and considered. Attention to attention to detail. Either use or ornament. For more information about the aforementioned wares, and the work of Neil Conley, please visit designersinresidence.org and neilconley.co.uk respectively.

		<description>New Designers Awards; supported by GFSmith.

- - - - - - - - - -

Commissioned exclusively for this year’s event, the New Designers 2012 awards package is a balance of two underlying themes; the notion of consistency and quality of message, and the celebration of design during London’s Olympic year.

Throughout the decades, Olympic design has often been a measure of the successes and universal pertinence of contemporary design. From Munich to Vancouver, a resolute stance on execution and clarity has set the precedent for considered, consistent, and beautiful design responses.

Designed as an alternative resolution to the London 2012 design concept, the New Designers Awards hopes to reinstate these themes during one of the world’s premier graduate design events: A culmination of the best amateur talent across multiple disciplines, contributing to an event of great quality.

New Designers 2012, London’s 27th Design Olympiad.

Munich

- - - - - - - - - -

The New Designers Awards pays homage to Otl Aicher’s visual communication of the Olympic Games in Munich 1972. The Munich design package aimed to create a multi-cultural and multi-lingual communication for the event, through a distinct framework of rules and principles: The printing of all communications was limited to a palette of colours selected from Munich’s Bavarian landscape (with each coming to represent different services and sectors for the games) and the generation of pictograms was so successful that it soon became an industry standard. Aicher was also responsible for imposing a standardised grid structure for all printed media, which was strictly adhered to, with only subtle variations in format to differentiate between the sporting and cultural Olympiads. These principles were applied to everything produced for the games; from posters, certificates and tickets, to promotional pin badges, matchboxes and beer mats.

The Trophy

- - - - - - - - - -

The form of the trophy was developed for both its simplicity and association. The face of the trophy references a modernist industrial design composition of two forms [rectangular and circular] with the brass medallion acting as the cornerstone of the Olympic theme. As the eye moves around the object, the visual weight of the medallion is balanced by the view of the knurled brass bolt - separated by the wooden body, and linked by the leather cable. The back of the award represents a traditional approach to materials and process; with the wood, leather and brass sharing a subtle sense of functionality – echoing the composition of the front, whilst supporting the notion of a traditionally skilled backbone to a piece of contemporary design.
The component composition references the coming together of all design disciplines; with each element representing a specific field present at the exhibition:

Bespoke ceramic bolt;
Ceramic &#38; Glass.

Leather strap;
Fashion &#38; Textiles.

Wooden body;
Traditional Furniture Design &#38; Architecture.

Components

- - - - - - - - - -

Wooden Body

Manufactured from oak, cherry and walnut, the body of the trophy reflects the skills and materials associated with the disciplines of traditional furniture making and architecture.
To manufacture the body, the timber section is first split lengthways; with each piece then being machined from this cut edge before re-joining. This leaves the impression of an impossibly hollow structure, with all grain directions left intact. The chosen production process for the body is a means of addressing ‘unsightly’ end-grain, in addition to giving the body the visual simplicity of unprocessed timber. An understated palette of woods has been selected to differentiate between the awards given for ‘New Designer of the Year’ [ &#38; Runner-Up ] and the remaining awards; with these produced in walnut, cherry and oak respectively.

- - - - - - - - - -

Brass Medallion

The main focus of the trophy, the brass medallion is the most literal reference to the Olympic theme. Staying true to the machining and materials of the transportation &#38; industrial design disciplines, the medal has been left with a machined finish. The choice to produce each medallion in brass was made to break the hierarchical structure of gold, silver and bronze associated with the Olympics – out of respect for the individual merits of each award.

- - - - - - - - - -

Leather neck strap

A representation of the disciplines of fashion and jewellery making, the neck strap for the medallion is cut and stamped from matte black leather and fastened with a brass eyelet.

- - - - - - - - - -

Bespoke ceramic bolt

Designed and made exclusively for inclusion in the trophy, each ceramic bolt is ground from aerospace-grade industrial ceramic. A nod to the presence of the ceramic and glass disciplines at the exhibition, the bolt is tapped with the corresponding thread to that of the brass medallion, allowing for the both the trophy and medal to be dissembled into all of its individual components. This reflects the value of each discipline in isolation, as well as their collective contribution to the event as a whole.

- - - - - - - - - -

Bespoke knurled brass bolt

Similarly to the ceramic bolt, the brass component was designed and produced exclusively for the trophy, the knurled bolt acts as both a visual and physical counterbalance to the brass medallion, as well as securing it to the wooden body at the desired height. The knurled detailing applied to the bolt acknowledges the interdependence between industrial process and traditional hand skills, whilst letting the user know that the bolt serves a purpose – a balance of ornamentation and function.

- - - - - - - - - -

Brass insert

A compromise of batch production in favour of cost, the brass insert is the only off-the-shelf component specified in the design of the trophy.

Supporting documentation

- - - - - - - - - -

Produced as the seventh component in the trophy design, the collection of awards documentation and stationery is a symbol of the two dimensional design disciplines at the New Designers exhibition. With continuing emphasis on process, continuity and execution, no fewer than five processes are used in the production of each winners pack; these include foiling, stamping, embossing, wax sealing and laser-cutting. The documentation features three major quality marks:
Embossed guilloché pattern; A reference to the traditional practices and graphics of the royal mint, and further cementation of the traditional scaffold which underpins the awards.

Gold foiling;
A notable Olympic influence, the foiling maintains consistency between the two and three dimensional elements in the collection.

Wax seal;
Featuring the New Designers trademark, the seal gives an additional sense of location and ceremony: Contemporary design, nurtured in Britain, sealed by the hand.

35 winners &#38; associate packs have been produced for the exhibition.

- - - - - - - - - -

Winners Envelope

Originally designed for the exhibition, the Winner’s Envelope is manufactured from oiled manila card and foiled with gold. Externally, the envelope features the ‘Award Winner’ emblem taken from the medallion, in conjunction with a footer located to match the proportion of the trophy. The envelope is fastened with a fabric cord, secured in place by two leather disks stamped from the hide used to make the trophy neck strap. This again demonstrates the sense of continuity that underpins the awards – all things in all mediums; considered, connected and relative.

- - - - - - - - - -

Award Winners Certificate

Produced on white GFSmith Plike stock, the Winner’s Certificate features a wax seal, embossed guilloché relief and traditional gold foiling. The two horizontal hang lines are a reference to the ‘waschelinie’ (washing line) featured in Otl Aicher’s cultural posters for the 1972 Munich Olympics; where the presence of a permanent horizon throughout every poster was used to increase the sense of continuity and movement. The two lines have been readdressed on the certificate to accommodate the name of both the award and the winning graduate. The combination of the hang lines and guilloché embossing has been used to break the document up further into five horizontal bands – another system used by Aicher and his team in the 1972 communications.

- - - - - - - - - -

Associate Prize Winners Certificate

Printed on the GFSmith ‘Olympic Ivory’ Malmarque stock, the Associate’s Certificate shares an identical format to the Award Winner’s Certificate; featuring the same embossing, wax, and foiling features.
A celebration of the GFSmith speciality papers, and an added reinforcement of the Olympic theme.

- - - - - - - - - -

Cheque sleeve

Produced from oiled manila card, with an embossed GFSmith Plike insert. The guilloché relief operates as an additional indication that the contents are both genuine and of commercial value.
All supporting documents from the sponsor, as well as any monetary prizes, are placed within this sleeve.

- - - - - - - - - -

Typeface

The typefaces used for both the trophy and print were again selected using the underlying principles of execution and relevance - with the combination of serif and sans-serif acting as a direct reference to the interdependence of traditional craft and industrial practice at the show. The sans-serif typeface that has been chosen is Univers. Selected for its clarity and uniformity, the typeface was used by Otl Aicher in his visual communication of the 1972 Munich Olympics.
The serif typeface that has been selected in conjunction with Univers is Caslon. This has been selected not only for its visual compatibility with Univers, but also due to the wide citation of Caslon as the first typeface of English origin – a further reinforcement of the importance of traditional practice on the development of great British design.
A bespoke arrangement of Caslon was developed for the certificate and envelope footers to give a spacing similar to that of a traditional ‘drop forged’ stamp. This was done to reflect the influences of traditional industrial process on the awards, and maintain the impression that the certificates were ‘forged’ rather than simply printed.

Each vase represents a nation, with a volume directly relative to its oil consumption. A series of 5 vases were produced entitled; USA, CHINA, UK, IRAQ, and the DRoC [Democratic Republic of Congo], each directly relative to the others.

Each nation was specifically chosen due to its comparative stage of, dependence on, and involvement in Oil exploitation.
The choice to produce vases, was not purely due to the form. The comparative sizes of the vases reflect starkly the abilities of these nations to sustain themselves on oil as a resource – for example; if the USA could maintain only one rose on 18,000,000 barrels per year, how can the DRoC expect to sustain even a daisy. Yet somehow it happens. he contrast in their oil consumptions is far greater than their contrast in population. As a percentage the DRoC uses .05% of the oil that the USA does, yet it has a population of approximately 21%.

Narrative, innovation and material relevance. All in equal measure.

The association of carbon fibre with the ‘pinnacle of performance’ has lead to it transcending the functional uses of hi-tech industries, to uses of exclusivity, luxury and edition in industries such as lifestyle and fine product. This was one of the key triggers in the birth of Earn / Urn. Despite Carbon fibre possessing many incredible properties, one that it does not possess is the ability to bio-degrade. For this exact reason, thousands of tonnes of composite products lie dormant in dumping grounds around the world – The majority of which are obsolete aircraft, preserved in graveyards such as the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona. When these dying jets are combined with the growing use of the composite in new aircraft, you cannot help but question the choices of designers in lifestyle industries to use it.

However, recent advances in carbon-fibre recycling now make it possible to unlock the fibres from these objects, leaving fibres ‘as pure as the virgin material’, prime for re-use. It is these fibres that are used, alongside a plant based resin, in the production of the Urns.

The intention of the project was to first of all create an entirely new material, that whilst maintaining the association with performance and exclusivity, made no additional impact through the creation or use of crude-oil resins. The Choice to produce a pair of cremation urns from the material was one of design poetics. Intended to reflect ‘a carbon cycle for the wider carbon cycle’, the urns portray the death and rebirth of a material, but at the same time, encourage those to see both themselves and all that surrounds them as part of a common cycle – one that must be kept in balance if we are to sustain ourselves.

Earn / Urn demonstrates not only the recyclable potential of carbon fibre, but also how relevant material sourcing can re-inject relevance to objects of narrative and poetry. Whilst we cannot ignore that some industries demand the use of certain materials, there will always be a need to find uses for their waste. Although the urns are by no means the complete solution to aircraft reincarnation, it is hoped that they may open eyes to a growing, non-degrading issue.
